It is usually a transitional state between wakefulness and sleep. It is often accompanied by terrifying hallucinations to which one is unable to react due to paralysis, and physical experiences (such as strong current running through the upper body).

- Lack of sleep
- Psychological conditions like bipolar condition
- Erratic sleep schedule.
- Sleeping on the back.
- Sleep problems (Nighttime leg cramps)
- Tension and stress
- Narcolepsy (Condition where a person randomly falls asleep)
- Certain medications, like ones that treat ADHD.
- Drug abuse.
